Journalist (報道)

Japan's Journalist (報道) status of residence covers foreign reporters, editors, cameramen, photographers, and announcers employed by or contracted to a foreign news organisation. Roles must directly involve news gathering or reporting; working for Japanese media is not permitted.

Stays are granted for up to 5 years (also available in 3-year and 1-year periods) and are renewable. A Certificate of Eligibility is required before the consulate application. Fees are ¥15,000 single-entry or ¥30,000 multiple-entry. Dependents may accompany; spouses can work with restrictions.

This visa is ideal for foreign journalists, correspondents, or editors employed by an overseas media organisation who need a long-term, renewable base in Japan to cover news.
