Artist (芸術)

Japan's Artist visa (芸術) is a status of residence for foreign nationals with a proven professional track record in creative fields — music, fine arts, literature, or photography. No employer sponsorship is required, but applicants must demonstrate substantial achievement through awards, exhibitions, or publications.

Stay periods run 3 months to 5 years, renewable, with a pathway to permanent residence. Dependents may accompany; spouses may work up to 28 hours/week with a special permit. Applicants must prove financial self-sufficiency through artistic income via contracts, purchase orders, or equivalent documentation.

This visa is ideal for independent professional artists with verifiable creative output who plan to generate income from their art while based in Japan.
