EV — Electronic Visa (E-visa)

The Vietnam Electronic Visa (e-visa) was officially launched on February 1, 2017, as a pilot program under the government’s broader initiative to modernize administrative procedures and stimulate the national economy. Established through the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit, and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam, the e-visa system was designed to replace the cumbersome, manual visa-on-arrival and embassy-based application processes that previously acted as a bottleneck for international visitors. By digitizing the entry authorization process, the Vietnamese government sought to bridge the gap between its ambitious tourism development goals and the logistical friction of its legacy immigration system. The program has since undergone significant expansions, most notably in August 2023, when the validity period for the e-visa was extended from 30 to 90 days, allowing for both single and multiple entries. This strategic shift reflects Vietnam's commitment to fostering a more open and accessible environment for international travelers, effectively streamlining border management while providing a flexible, user-friendly digital gateway that accommodates the modern demands of global mobility.

The ideal applicant for the Vietnam e-visa is a traveler or business professional from one of the 157+ eligible countries who intends to visit for short-term purposes, such as leisure tourism, visiting relatives, or conducting preliminary business activities like market research or attending conferences. Unlike traditional visa categories that often require formal sponsorship or complex documentation, the e-visa is remarkably inclusive, as it imposes no specific educational or professional requirements, making it highly accessible to a broad demographic of global citizens. It is particularly distinctive for its efficiency and autonomy; applicants can secure authorization entirely online from anywhere in the world, bypassing the need for physical embassy visits or the uncertainty of visa-on-arrival queues. While the e-visa is a powerful tool for short-term stays, it is important to note that it is strictly limited to non-immigrant activities and cannot be converted into a long-term work permit or residency status while within the country. Despite these limitations, the e-visa remains the most cost-effective and streamlined option for the vast majority of visitors, offering a seamless entry experience that supports Vietnam’s position as a premier destination for international engagement.
