The Employment Pass (EP) Category III is a work permit issued by the Malaysian government to facilitate the hiring of foreign technical specialists and junior-level professionals. Historically, this category was established to bridge the gap between high-level executive roles (Categories I and II) and general labor, allowing Malaysian companies to recruit expatriates for niche technical positions that require specific expertise not readily available in the local workforce. It is managed primarily through the Expatriate Services Division (ESD) of the Immigration Department of Malaysia.

This visa is ideal for young professionals, technical engineers, and specialized tradespeople who earn a monthly salary between RM 3,000 and RM 4,999. It is frequently utilized by multinational corporations in the manufacturing, IT, and engineering sectors to fill essential operational roles. A key distinguishing feature of Category III is its focus on short-term technical assignments, typically issued for a maximum of 12 months at a time, and its requirement for specific approval or exemption from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA).
