Germany's §18d AufenthG residence permit lets non-EU researchers conduct scientific work at a recognized German institution. Applicants need a hosting agreement with a qualifying research body and a master's-level qualification. No labor market test applies — the researcher's expertise is sufficient.

The permit is issued for at least one year, renewable for the project duration, with a 9-month job-seeking extension after completion. Spouses may work without restriction.
