Overview

Issued to foreign lawyers licensed to practice law in Vietnam, valid up to 5 years — one of the longest visa durations available.

The Lawyer Visa (LS) in Vietnam was established as a strategic legislative response to the country’s rapid integration into the global economy and its subsequent accession to the World Trade Organization. Recognizing that a burgeoning market economy requires robust legal infrastructure, the Vietnamese government enacted the Law on Lawyers and subsequent immigration decrees to facilitate the presence of international legal experts who provide essential advisory services for foreign direct investment, cross-border commercial transactions, and international arbitration. This visa category fills a critical gap in the immigration system by creating a specialized pathway for highly regulated professionals who do not fit neatly into the standard labor categories. Unlike general work permits that are often tied to specific, short-term employment contracts, the LS visa acknowledges the unique nature of legal practice, where practitioners must maintain long-term, stable relationships with clients and regulatory bodies. By providing a dedicated legal framework, Vietnam ensures that international law firms can operate with the continuity necessary to navigate the complexities of the domestic legal landscape while upholding the professional standards required by the Ministry of Justice.

The ideal applicant for the LS visa is a qualified foreign legal professional who has been formally licensed to practice law within Vietnam, either through a foreign law firm’s branch office, a subsidiary, or a partnership with a local Vietnamese law firm. This visa is specifically designed for attorneys, legal consultants, and partners who provide expert counsel in areas such as corporate law, intellectual property, maritime law, and international trade compliance. What makes this visa particularly distinctive is its exceptional duration; it is one of the longest-term visas available in the Vietnamese immigration system, offering validity for up to five years. This extended timeframe is a significant benefit, as it provides the stability required for long-term legal projects and fosters a deeper integration of international legal expertise into the local market. However, the visa is strictly tethered to the applicant’s professional standing; it requires continuous affiliation with a licensed law firm or authorized legal organization. Consequently, the primary limitation is that the visa is non-transferable and ceases to be valid if the practitioner’s legal license is revoked or if their professional affiliation with the sponsoring entity is terminated, ensuring that the privilege of this long-term residency remains exclusively reserved for active, compliant members of the legal community.
