Overview

Other NATO officials not classifiable under NATO-1 through NATO-3.

The NATO-4 is a US visa for NATO officials who do not fit the NATO-1, NATO-2, or NATO-3 categories, covering officers, employees, contractors, and advisors on authorized NATO missions under the 1951 Ottawa Agreement and the Paris Protocol.

Admission is granted for Duration of Status (D/S) with no fixed end date, tied to the NATO assignment and renewable while it continues. MRV and reciprocity fees are waived. There is no PR pathway, work is restricted to NATO duties, and dependents may seek work authorization via Form I-566.

This visa is ideal for accredited NATO personnel posted to the US whose stay is bound to an official Alliance mission rather than independent employment.

Diplomatic note and/or official travel orders from NATO headquarters confirming role and status

Advantages & Considerations

Key Benefits

  • Completely fee-exempt — no MRV fee, no issuance fee, no reciprocity fee
  • No annual cap or numerical limit — purely demand-driven
  • Duration of Status admission — no fixed departure date
  • Interview typically waived
  • No English language proficiency requirement
  • Dependents may obtain work authorization via Form I-566

Worth Knowing

  • Work authorization strictly limited to NATO-assigned duties — no outside employment
  • In-US renewal not available for NATO-4 (unlike NATO-1 and NATO-6); must renew at a US Embassy or Consulate abroad
  • No direct pathway to permanent residency; no dual-intent provision
  • Dependent work authorization requires separate I-566 application through NATO headquarters
  • Standard INA §212 inadmissibility grounds apply; criminal history may require diplomatic waiver
  • Status ends when NATO assignment ends
