Overview

Officers or employees of international organizations (UN, World Bank, IMF, etc.) and their immediate family.

The G-4 visa covers officers and employees of US-designated international organizations — including the UN, World Bank, IMF, WHO, and OAS — and their immediate families. Holders are admitted for Duration of Status, meaning no fixed expiry date; status lasts for the entire organizational appointment.

There is no MRV application fee, and consular interviews are often waived. Spouses and unmarried children under 21 receive derivative G-4 status automatically; dependents may obtain an EAD (via I-566 and I-765) to work for any US employer. Long-term holders can pursue a special immigrant green card via Form I-360.

This visa is ideal for professional staff — economists, policy analysts, technical specialists — taking up a confirmed appointment at a recognized US-based international body.

Advantages & Considerations

Key Benefits

  • No visa fee at any stage — application and renewal are both free
  • Duration of Status admission — no fixed expiry date while employed
  • Renewable inside the United States via DS-1648 without traveling abroad
  • Consular interview is often waived
  • Dependents (spouse and qualifying children) eligible for Employment Authorization Document (EAD) to work for any US employer
  • Path to permanent residence after long-term service via EB-4 Special Immigrant category
  • Standard adjustment of status bars (unlawful presence, unauthorized work) are waived for the EB-4 green card route
  • No annual quota or numerical cap

Worth Knowing

  • Status is tied entirely to the position — G-4 status ends when employment ends
  • Principal may only work at the specific designated international organization; no outside employment permitted
  • Must reside in the metropolitan area of the assigned office
  • Unmarried domestic partners are not eligible for G-4 derivative status
  • Dual intent is not permitted — holders must maintain nonimmigrant intent while in status
  • EB-4 green card petition (I-360) must be filed no later than 6 months after retirement or qualifying event
  • Remote work outside the assigned post location appears inconsistent with full-time residency and attendance requirements

Application Process

1

Obtain a diplomatic note/travel orders from the employing international organization

2

Complete Form DS-160 (Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application) at ceac.state.gov

3

Schedule appointment at nearest US Embassy or Consulate (interview often waived for G-category)

4

Attend visa interview (if required) and submit documentation

5

Present visa at US port of entry

6

For in-US renewal: complete Form DS-1648 at ceac.state.gov/agnato/, obtain organization seal on confirmation page, submit to Diplomatic Liaison Division in Washington DC

7

For change of status: file Form I-566 and Form I-539 with USCIS along with diplomatic note and current immigration documents
