Overview

Representative of a government not recognized by the U.S. or a non-member government to an international organization.

The G-3 visa covers representatives of governments not recognized by the United States who attend or work with a designated international organization such as the UN, IMF, or World Bank. There is no MRV application fee and fingerprinting is waived, reflecting its quasi-diplomatic character.

Holders are admitted on Duration of Status — stay is tied to the official assignment, with a 30-day grace period after it ends. Family members may accompany and seek work authorization via Form I-566. The principal may work only in their official capacity at the designated organization; renewal must be done abroad.

This visa is ideal for officials from non-recognized or observer governments who must participate in multilateral forums but are ineligible for standard A-category diplomatic visas.

Advantages & Considerations

Key Benefits

  • No visa application fee (MRV fee exempt)
  • Fingerprinting waived at application
  • Duration of Status admission — no need to extend while official assignment continues
  • Derivative visas available for immediate family members (spouse and unmarried children)
  • Eligible family members may seek employment authorization via Form I-566

Worth Knowing

  • G-3 cannot be renewed inside the US — must apply at a US embassy or consulate abroad
  • Domestic DS-1648 renewal process is available only for G-1 and G-4 holders
  • Status immediately affected if the official assignment ends or US Secretary of State recognition lapses
  • Adjustment of status to LPR requires filing Form I-508 (waiver of privileges) and State Department approval before USCIS will process I-485
  • Dependent family members do not have automatic work authorization — must obtain separate approval via I-566
  • No statutory dual intent protection
  • Distinct from G-1 (recognized government) — for non-recognized governments only
