Overview

The F-1 visa is a nonimmigrant visa for international students who wish to pursue full-time academic studies at a U.S. institution certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).

The F-1 is the primary US nonimmigrant visa for full-time academic study at SEVP-certified colleges, universities, high schools, and language programs. Students are admitted for Duration of Status (D/S), not a fixed date, and may stay as long as they maintain valid status and an active I-20 through their school DSO.

Mandatory fees total $535 ($350 SEVIS I-901 + $185 MRV). On-campus work is allowed up to 20 hours per week during term; off-campus options include CPT, 12 months of OPT, and a 24-month STEM OPT extension. Spouses and children under 21 may accompany on F-2 status but cannot work. Dual intent is not permitted.

This visa is ideal for international students accepted at a US institution who want a status-based stay with practical training options during and after study.
