Overview

5-year multiple-entry visa for digital nomads, remote workers, and soft-power participants; 180 days per entry, THB 500,000 savings required.

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), launched 15 July 2024 by Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is a 5-year multiple-entry visitor visa created to formalise the status of long-stay remote workers and soft-power participants who had previously fallen between the tourist and work-permit regimes.

The visa is split into three streams (DTV1 workcation, DTV2 soft power, DTV3 dependants), grants 180 days per entry extendable once in-country for another 180 days, and costs THB 10,000. Applicants must show 500,000 THB in savings; remote work for foreign clients is permitted, but DTV holders cannot take up employment with a Thai company.

This visa is ideal for non-Thai remote workers, freelancers, soft-power participants (Muay Thai, Thai culinary, medical tourism), and their spouses or children under 20 who want a flexible long-term base in Thailand without a local sponsor.

Advantages & Considerations

Key Benefits

  • 5-year multiple-entry validity from one application
  • 180 days per entry, extendable once in-country for another 180 days
  • No Thai employer or sponsor required - self-petitioned
  • Covers digital nomads, freelancers, and Thai soft-power activities (Muay Thai, cooking, medical)
  • Dependants (spouse + children under 20) qualifying for matching DTV3 visa
  • Online application through the official Thai e-Visa portal (thaievisa.go.th)

Worth Knowing

  • Must show 500,000 THB (~USD 13,500) in savings over the last 3 months
  • Not a residence permit and not a PR pathway under Thai immigration
  • Cannot work for a Thai employer - remote work must be for foreign clients/employer
  • Fee (THB 10,000) and processing time vary by Royal Thai Embassy/Consulate
  • Maximum 360 continuous days per entry+extension before required exit and re-entry
  • Unable to evidence 500,000 THB in savings (or equivalent sponsor letter)
  • Income depends on a Thai employer (DTV does not authorise local employment)
  • Under 20 years of age (except as a child dependant of a DTV holder)
  • Prior deportation from or visa overstay in Thailand

Application Process

1

Confirm qualification for one of the three DTV categories: Workcation (digital nomad / remote worker / freelancer / foreign talent), Thai soft-power activities, or DTV-holder dependant

2

Prepare financial evidence: 3 months of bank statements ending at >= 500,000 THB (or equivalent sponsor letter)

3

Gather supporting documents: passport, photo, employment contract or portfolio (workcation) or acceptance/appointment letter (soft power) or relationship proof (dependant)

4

Create an account and submit the application online at thaievisa.go.th (preferred), or apply in person at a Royal Thai Embassy/Consulate

5

Pay the visa fee online by credit card (Visa or Mastercard); fees are non-refundable

6

Wait for consular processing (approximately 2 working days to 4 weeks depending on consulate)

7

Receive the e-visa or visa sticker; visa is valid 5 years multiple-entry with 180 days per entry, one-time in-country extension of 180 days available
