Overview

Portugal residence visa for non-EU remote workers and freelancers earning €3,680+/month from foreign employers or clients, with renewable permits and 5-year PR pathway.

Portugal's D8 Digital Nomad Visa, launched October 2022, lets non-EU remote workers and freelancers reside in Portugal while serving foreign employers or international clients. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues two pathways: a Temporary Stay visa for under one year, and a Residency visa leading to a renewable AIMA residence permit.

Applicants must earn at least €3,680/month (four times Portugal's 2026 minimum wage of €920) from non-Portuguese sources and show roughly €11,000 in savings. The national visa fee is €110; Temporary Stay decisions take about 30 days, Residency cases around 60. The residence permit runs two years initially and renews for three-year periods, with permanent residency available after five years.

This visa is ideal for established remote professionals and freelancers earning well above Portugal's minimum wage who want EU residency without a local job.
