C-1 Transit Visa

The C-1 Transit Visa is a non-immigrant visa category established under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) to facilitate the movement of foreign nationals passing through the United States in immediate and continuous transit to a foreign destination. It was designed to ensure that travelers whose itineraries require a layover or transfer within U.S. borders can do so legally without the broader privileges associated with tourism or business visas. The visa serves as a critical procedural tool for international travel logistics, particularly for routes where the U.S. acts as a primary global transit hub.

This visa is ideal for individuals who do not qualify for the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) and whose sole purpose for entering the United States is to reach a third-country destination. It is frequently utilized by travelers with layovers that require changing airports or staying overnight, as well as those whose transportation involves a stop in U.S. territory. Unlike other visitor visas, the C-1 is strictly limited to the duration of the transit and does not permit the holder to engage in activities unrelated to their onward journey.
