Overview

Residence permit for unmarried minor children (under 18, including adopted) of a third-country national legally residing in Malta for at least one year.

The Family Reunification Permit for a minor child allows third-country nationals residing in Malta to bring their unmarried children under the age of 18 to live with them. This policy prioritizes the best interests of the child, facilitating the maintenance of the family unit. The sponsor must demonstrate that they have the financial capacity to provide for the child's needs, including education and healthcare, and that they have suitable housing that meets the required health and safety standards. If the child is from a previous relationship, the sponsor must provide legal proof of custody or written consent from the other biological parent.

This permit is specifically for the minor children of non-EU residents who are already legally settled in Malta. It is a vital mechanism for expatriate families to ensure their children can grow up in a stable environment alongside their parents. The application process requires rigorous verification of the parent-child relationship through official, legalised civil status documents. Once the permit is granted, the child is entitled to reside in Malta and access the state education system, ensuring they can integrate into the local community while remaining under the care and protection of their parents.
