Overview

For foreign nationals legally married to a Korean citizen, enabling long-term residence and eventual permanent residency.

The F-6 Marriage Migrant Visa was introduced in December 2011 to replace the previous F-2-1 status, specifically to provide a more stable and protected legal framework for foreign nationals married to Korean citizens. This change was implemented to address issues where foreign spouses were vulnerable to the cancellation of their residency status by their Korean partners, thereby ensuring a more secure and equitable stay. By formalizing the marriage-based immigration process, the government created a dedicated pathway that guarantees the rights of the foreign spouse to live and work in Korea, reflecting the state's recognition of the growing number of multicultural families.

This visa is for foreign nationals who are legally married to a Korean citizen and intend to reside in Korea. It is also available to parents raising a child born from such a marriage. A distinctive aspect of the F-6 is that it grants the holder broad work rights without needing a separate work permit, providing significant autonomy compared to other visa types. Applicants must prove the genuineness of their relationship, demonstrate basic communication ability in a shared language, and meet financial and housing stability requirements. It is a vital status that offers a clear, renewable path to permanent residency and, eventually, simplified naturalization for those committed to their life in Korea.
