Overview

Authorization for foreign nationals placed with recognized organizations in Kenya for structured internship programs, valid for the duration of the internship.

The Kenya Internship Pass was established under the framework of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act, 2011, and its subsequent regulations, designed to formalize the entry of foreign nationals seeking professional development within the country’s burgeoning economic landscape. This visa category was created to bridge a critical gap in the immigration system, specifically addressing the need for a structured, legal pathway for international students and recent graduates to gain hands-on experience without the stringent requirements associated with standard work permits. By facilitating the movement of talent into Kenya, the government aims to foster international cooperation, knowledge transfer, and cross-border professional networking. The pass serves as a regulatory mechanism that ensures foreign interns are properly documented while engaging with recognized local and international organizations, thereby aligning with Kenya’s broader developmental goals of integrating its workforce into the global economy while maintaining rigorous oversight of foreign labor participation.

The ideal applicant for the Internship Pass is a motivated student or recent graduate who has secured a placement with a recognized organization, research institution, or non-governmental entity operating within Kenya. This visa covers a diverse array of fields, ranging from international development and environmental conservation to technology, agriculture, and public health, making it a versatile tool for those looking to contribute to Kenya’s specific socio-economic sectors. What makes this pass distinctive compared to traditional work visas is its streamlined nature; it is specifically tailored for temporary, structured learning experiences rather than permanent employment, thereby exempting the applicant from the complex labor market testing often required for professional work permits. While the pass offers the significant benefit of legal residency for the duration of the internship, it carries the limitation of being strictly non-remunerative in terms of career-track employment—meaning the holder cannot transition directly into a permanent role without applying for a separate class of work permit. Furthermore, the mandatory requirement for comprehensive health insurance underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that international participants remain protected during their stay, balancing the accessibility of the program with the necessity of personal security and institutional accountability.
