Overview

Residence permit for individuals aged 18+ invited to work unpaid for an acknowledged non-governmental organization engaged in charitable or humanitarian activities in Iceland.

The Volunteer Residence Permit is designed for individuals aged 18 and older who wish to contribute to charitable or humanitarian efforts in Iceland. This permit is specifically intended for those invited by recognized non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that operate on a non-profit and tax-exempt basis. It allows volunteers to immerse themselves in Icelandic society while supporting meaningful causes, provided the work performed is directly in line with the organization's stated mission. Applicants must ensure their financial stability throughout their stay, either through the sponsoring organization or their own resources, and must maintain valid health insurance coverage.

This permit is a pathway for non-EEA/EFTA citizens to engage in altruistic work within the country. Because it is a temporary residence category, it does not lead to permanent residency or allow for standard employment in the Icelandic labor market. The application process requires rigorous documentation, including a formal contract with the host NGO and proof of sufficient funds to cover living expenses. It is an excellent opportunity for those looking to gain international experience in the non-profit sector while living in Iceland, provided they meet all strict eligibility criteria and can demonstrate a clear, non-commercial purpose for their residency.
