The Directorate of Immigration evaluates these applications on a case-by-case basis, looking for strong social, cultural, or family bonds that warrant an exception to standard immigration rules. It is not intended to replace other specific permit types.

This permit is rarely granted to those who have never lived in Iceland, as the threshold for proving 'special ties' from abroad is extremely high. Ties formed during stays as a student, volunteer, au-pair, or on a working holiday do not count toward this permit. The applicant must provide a compelling written justification and supporting evidence to demonstrate why their connection to Iceland is unique and significant.
