Overview

Catch-all residence permit for individuals whose circumstances do not fit standard categories but who have a legitimate and special reason to reside in Iceland.

The Residence Permit for Legitimate and Special Purpose is established under the Icelandic Act on Foreigners. It serves as a flexible, discretionary mechanism designed to address unique individual circumstances that do not fall under the specific criteria of standard residence permits. This permit fills a critical gap in the immigration framework by allowing the Directorate of Immigration to authorize a legal stay in exceptional cases where an applicant demonstrates a compelling, non-standard reason for needing to reside in Iceland, ensuring that the law can accommodate complex human situations that are not otherwise codified.

This permit is intended for individuals facing extraordinary circumstances, such as those requiring an extended stay due to sudden illness or injury, individuals involved in specific legal proceedings within Icelandic courts, or those with other highly specific, non-routine needs. It is distinct because it is not an entitlement but an authorization granted based on an overall assessment of the applicant's case. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, provide proof of identity, maintain valid health insurance, and demonstrate independent financial support.
