Overview

Stay up to 180 days in Iceland while teleworking for a foreign employer, with at least ISK 1,000,000 monthly income (ISK 1,300,000 with partner).

Iceland's Long-Term Visa for Remote Work lets non-EEA/EFTA citizens who are already visa-exempt for the Schengen Area live in Iceland for up to 180 days while continuing to work for a foreign employer or their own foreign business. The visa is paper-only, costs ISK 12,200, and is not renewable: holders must leave and wait 12 months before applying again.

Applicants must prove foreign monthly income of at least ISK 1,000,000 (about USD 7,400), or ISK 1,300,000 if bringing a spouse or cohabiting partner, plus valid health insurance covering the stay. Holders cannot get an Icelandic ID number, settle permanently, or take any job in the Icelandic labour market; the visa is purely an extended-stay endorsement for remote professionals.

This visa is ideal for well-paid digital nomads from visa-exempt countries (such as the US, UK, Canada, Japan, Australia) who want one extended Icelandic stay with family rather than relocation.

Advantages & Considerations

Key Benefits

  • Up to 180 days (6 months) of legal stay beyond the standard Schengen 90/180 short-stay limit.
  • Spouses, cohabiting partners, and children can join as dependents on the same application.
  • Low application fee of ISK 12,200 (about USD 90) for the principal applicant.
  • No Icelandic employer or sponsor required: self-petitioned with a foreign employer or self-employment.
  • Time in Iceland on the visa does not require moving your legal domicile or getting an Icelandic ID number.
  • Decision generally issued before the proposed stay starts, so plans can be confirmed in advance.

Worth Knowing

  • Income bar is high: ISK 1,000,000/month single or ISK 1,300,000/month with a partner (foreign-sourced).
  • Paper-only application: forms must be posted or dropped at the Directorate of Immigration in Reykjavik.
  • Valid health insurance covering the full stay in Iceland must be in place before applying.
  • Holders cannot work for any Icelandic entity or otherwise enter the local labour market.
  • No Icelandic ID number (kennitala), so access to local banking and services is limited.
  • Citizens of countries that require a Schengen visa to enter Iceland are not eligible.
  • Anyone granted a long-term remote-work visa in the previous 12 months cannot reapply.
  • Not renewable and does not lead to permanent residence or Icelandic citizenship.
