International Protection – Spouse of Refugee (Dvalarleyfi maka flóttamanns)

The residence permit for the spouse of a refugee is a form of family reunification designed to allow the partners of individuals granted international protection in Iceland to join them. This permit applies to both married spouses and cohabiting partners, provided the relationship existed prior to the refugee's arrival in Iceland. By reuniting with the refugee, the spouse is generally granted the same rights and obligations as the refugee, including the right to work without a separate work permit and access to the same social protections.

Because the spouse is defined as a refugee under Icelandic law and international agreements, they are subject to the same travel restrictions as the primary refugee; traveling back to their home country may jeopardize their protection status and residence permit. The application process is rigorous to ensure the authenticity of the relationship, and the Directorate of Immigration may conduct interviews to rule out unions of convenience. Once granted, the permit is typically issued for up to three years, aligning with the status of the primary refugee, and provides a pathway toward permanent residency.
