Family Reunification – Children (Dvalarleyfi barna)

This residence permit is designed for children under the age of 18 who are reuniting with their parent(s) residing in Iceland. It is based on the provisions of the Foreign Nationals Act, which aims to protect the right to family life by ensuring that children can live with their custodial parents. The permit fills the gap for non-EEA/EFTA minor children who do not have an independent right to reside in Iceland but need legal status to accompany or join their parents who are already legally settled in the country.

This permit is intended for minor children (under 18) who are in the custody of a parent living in Iceland. It is distinct because it is strictly tied to the parent's legal status; the child's permit is generally granted for the same duration as the parent's permit. The applicant must be unmarried and not in a cohabitation relationship. While it does not automatically grant the right to work, it provides a stable legal basis for the child to reside, attend school, and access social services alongside their family in Iceland.
