Overview

Lifetime visa-free entry to India for people of Indian origin. Registered OCI cardholders get multiple entry lifelong visa for any purpose.

The Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Card is a prestigious immigration status granted to foreign citizens of Indian origin, effectively serving as a lifetime, multiple-entry, multi-purpose visa for visiting India. Introduced to strengthen ties with the Indian diaspora, the OCI card allows holders to live, work, and study in India indefinitely without the need for periodic visa renewals or registration with local police authorities. OCI cardholders enjoy parity with Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in various financial, economic, and educational fields, including access to domestic airfares and entry fees for national monuments, though they are notably excluded from political rights like voting or holding constitutional office.

Eligibility for the OCI card is generally extended to individuals who were Indian citizens on or after January 26, 1950, or who were eligible to become citizens at that time, as well as their descendants. Spouses of Indian citizens or existing OCI cardholders may also apply after a period of continuous marriage. The application process is rigorous, requiring proof of Indian origin—such as an old Indian passport, birth certificate, or ancestral documents—along with a renunciation certificate if the applicant previously held Indian citizenship. Once granted, the OCI card is a lifelong document, though holders must periodically update their details online whenever they obtain a new passport.
