Overview

An Irish long-stay D visa or preclearance letting a qualifying minister of religion enter and reside in Ireland for up to three years under sponsorship by a religious body.

The Minister of Religion permission lets non-EEA religious personnel enter and remain in Ireland to serve a sponsoring religious body, under the Department of Justice policy of November 2022 (updated June 2023). Visa-required nationals apply for a long-stay D visa; non-visa-required nationals apply for preclearance. Permission is granted for up to one year initially, renewable to three years.

The sponsor must be an established Irish religious body — not an individual — with active membership, dedicated premises and audited accounts. It must show genuine need, vouch for qualifications, maintain Children First child-protection policies, and provide support or housing. Applicants need a current police clearance; Garda vetting in Ireland is required before any work with children.

This visa is ideal for ordained ministers, priests, and religious workers with an offer from a recognised Irish religious body that is willing to sponsor them and meet the November 2022 policy requirements.

Advantages & Considerations

Key Benefits

  • Pathway to longer-term residency in Ireland after the initial three-year permission
  • Spouse/civil partner and minor children may apply to join the minister
  • Low official fees — €60 visa or preclearance plus €300 IRP registration
  • Applications can be lodged up to three months before travel

Worth Knowing

  • Current Dublin processing for Minister of Religion runs around seven months
  • Work is strictly limited to ministerial duties for the sponsoring religious body
  • Heavy sponsor obligations (audited accounts, child-protection, Garda vetting)
  • Cannot work with children or vulnerable adults until Garda vetting is complete
  • No eligible Irish sponsoring religious body to invite the applicant
  • Inability to obtain a current police-clearance certificate from country of residence
  • Applicant is applying from a country where they are not legally resident

Application Process

1

Confirm whether you are visa-required or non-visa-required (visa-required nationals apply for a long stay 'D' visa; non-visa-required nationals apply for preclearance) before travel

2

Obtain written sponsorship from an eligible Irish religious body and assemble supporting documents (sponsor obligations, qualifications, police clearance, financial support evidence)

3

Complete the online AVATS application form (Part 1) and pay the application fee

4

Print, sign and date the application summary/declaration produced by AVATS and submit it with supporting documents to the relevant Visa Office, Embassy or Consulate (applications can be made up to 3 months before intended travel)

5

After approval, travel to Ireland with the preclearance letter or D visa (entry remains at the discretion of an immigration officer at the border)

6

Within 90 days of arrival, register your permission with immigration and obtain an Irish Residence Permit (IRP) at a cost of €300
