Temporary Protection Status (Ideiglenes védelem)

The Temporary Protection Status in Hungary, known as *ideiglenes védelem*, was formally established as a rapid-response mechanism to address large-scale humanitarian crises where the standard individual asylum process would be overwhelmed by a sudden influx of displaced persons. Rooted in the European Union’s Temporary Protection Directive (2001/55/EC), which was activated by the Council of the European Union in response to the mass displacement caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, this status serves as an exceptional legal instrument.
