Airport Transit Visa (Type A)

The Airport Transit Visa (Type A) for Croatia is a specialized permit established under the Schengen Borders Code, which Croatia fully adopted upon its accession to the Schengen Area on January 1, 2023. Its primary purpose is to regulate the movement of specific third-country nationals who must pass through the international transit area of a Croatian airport without entering the national territory or the wider Schengen zone. This visa ensures that travelers from countries deemed to have a higher risk of irregular migration can safely and legally connect between two non-Schengen flights.

This visa is ideal for passengers who have a layover at an airport such as Zagreb (ZAG) or Split (SPU) while traveling from one non-Schengen country to another non-Schengen destination. It is specifically designed for those who do not intend to leave the airport's international zone, stay overnight in a hotel outside the airport, or pass through border control. It serves as a critical administrative requirement for maintaining border security while facilitating international civil aviation.

A key distinguishing feature of the Type A visa is its narrow scope; it does not grant the holder the right to move within the Schengen Area or even to exit the terminal building. Unlike the Short-stay Visa (Type C), the Type A visa is strictly limited to the duration of the transit. It is only required for citizens of countries listed in Annex IV of the Visa Code or those specifically designated by Croatian national legislation, making it a highly targeted travel document.
