Overview

Long-stay parent visa (90-365 days) for third-country nationals entering Greece for study, work, family reunification, financial independence or other documented purposes.

Greece's National Visa (Type D) is the long-stay entry authorisation issued by Greek consular missions to third-country nationals staying more than 90 days, up to 365 days. It is a parent category covering employment, studies, family reunification, financial independence, Golden Visa, digital nomad and other purposes under Joint Ministerial Decree 30825/2014.

Applicants appear in person at the consular post for biometrics and interview, prove the purpose of stay, and hold travel medical insurance of at least EUR 30,000. The standard consular fee is 150 EUR, rising to 1,000 EUR for employment, financial-independence and Golden Visa categories, plus a 16 EUR card fee.

This visa is ideal for non-EU nationals who know which long-stay residence permit they will pursue in Greece and need a legal entry channel to file that permit on arrival.

Advantages & Considerations

Key Benefits

  • Single entry channel covering work, study, family, financial independence and digital nomad streams
  • Valid for up to 365 days, enough time to file the matching residence permit in Greece
  • Direct gateway to a Greek residence permit and onward Schengen mobility
  • Standard consular fee of just 150 EUR for most categories
  • Dependents can be brought under the same purpose-specific stream
  • Application form itself is free of charge

Worth Knowing

  • Must be converted to a residence permit after arrival — the visa alone does not authorise long-term stay
  • Consular fee jumps to 1,000 EUR for employment, financial-independence and Golden Visa categories
  • Personal appearance and interview at the Greek consular post are mandatory
  • Documentation requirements vary sharply by purpose (Chapters A-H of Decree 30825/2014)
  • Work rights depend entirely on the underlying purpose and resulting residence permit
  • Open only to third-country (non-EU/EEA/Swiss) nationals
  • Cannot be issued without a documented qualifying purpose of stay
  • Travel medical insurance with EUR 30,000 minimum coverage is mandatory
