Overview

Permanent residence for Ghanaians by birth, adoption, registration, or naturalization who lost citizenship by acquiring foreign nationality, granting unrestricted residence and work rights.

The Right of Abode is a prestigious immigration status in Ghana that grants the holder the right to reside and work in the country indefinitely without the need for a visa or a work permit. It is primarily designed for two distinct groups: individuals who were once Ghanaian citizens but lost their citizenship upon acquiring the nationality of another country, and persons of African descent in the Diaspora who wish to reconnect with their roots and settle permanently in Ghana. This status is highly sought after as it removes standard immigration controls, allowing holders to live as settled residents while maintaining their foreign nationality.

Because the Right of Abode confers significant privileges akin to those of a citizen, the application process is rigorous and discretionary. It requires the approval of the Minister for the Interior and, in many cases, the President. Applicants must undergo thorough background and character checks to ensure they are of good standing and possess the means to support themselves. Furthermore, the government looks for evidence of how the applicant intends to contribute to the nation's socio-economic development. Once granted, the status provides a stable, long-term foundation for individuals looking to make Ghana their permanent home.
