Advantages & Considerations

Key Benefits

  • Covers both elite sportspersons and qualified sports coaches
  • Partner and children under 18 may accompany as dependants
  • Dependants can work and study in the UK
  • Study permitted alongside the visa
  • Playing for a national team in the UK is explicitly permitted
  • Sports broadcasting work is permitted
  • Up to 20 hours/week secondary employment allowed (same profession or Skilled Worker salary list roles)
  • Clear pathway to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 5 years
  • Renewable in 3-year increments with no stated maximum

Worth Knowing

  • No access to public funds (welfare benefits or social housing)
  • Cannot start or run a business
  • Secondary employment cannot begin until primary sponsorship work has started
  • Extension requires a new CoS and renewed governing body endorsement — not automatic
  • Dependants must apply separately; their visas do not auto-extend
  • Cannot travel outside UK/Ireland/Channel Islands/Isle of Man while an in-country extension is pending
  • Only sports covered by Appendix M governing bodies are eligible
