Overview

For BN(O) status holders and their family members to live, work and study in the UK.

The UK British National (Overseas) visa lets BN(O) status holders and their family members live, work, and study in the UK. It requires no job offer, no salary threshold, and no points — eligibility rests entirely on BN(O) status or descent from a BN(O) holder born on or after 1 July 1979.

The visa is granted for 2.5 or 5 years, with unlimited renewals and a clear 5-year pathway to ILR (indefinite leave to remain). Application fees are £206 (30-month) or £285 (5-year); the Immigration Health Surcharge adds £2,587.50–£5,175 per adult. Dual intent is permitted and spouses work without restriction.

This visa is ideal for Hong Kong BN(O) holders and their families seeking a flexible, status-based route to UK permanent settlement and eventual citizenship.

Advantages & Considerations

Key Benefits

  • Live, work, and study in UK with minimal restrictions — no job offer required
  • Full work authorisation for any employer or sector (except professional sports)
  • Self-employment and entrepreneurship permitted
  • No points-based criteria — status-based humanitarian route
  • Unlimited renewals — no cap on number of extensions
  • Clear 5-year pathway to ILR (indefinite leave to remain / permanent settlement)
  • ILR leads to British citizenship after just 1 additional year (6 years total from arrival)
  • Full family inclusion — partner, children, dependent adult children, dependent relatives
  • Can switch to BNO visa from inside UK on another visa
  • No annual quota or lottery — open rolling applications
  • Fee exemption available for low-income 30-month extension applicants

Worth Knowing

  • No access to most public funds/benefits (limited hardship exceptions only)
  • Cannot work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach
  • Immigration Health Surcharge must be paid upfront — significant cost for families (e.g. £5,175 per adult for 5-year visa)
  • 180-day rule: cannot spend more than 180 days outside UK in any 12-month period to qualify for ILR
  • Visa start date is the approval date — cannot request a future start date
  • Must not travel outside UK/Channel Islands/Isle of Man while an in-country application is pending
  • ILR requires: Life in the UK Test, English B1 level (or degree taught in English), £3,029 fee per person
  • Children under 18 must be accompanied by or joining a parent already in the UK
  • Student visa and Youth Mobility Scheme years do not count toward the 5-year ILR clock
  • Processing may take longer if documents need verification, interview required, or criminal convictions declared
