Airport Transit Visa (Type A)

The Airport Transit Visa (Type A), known in Spain as the Visado de Tránsito Aeroportuario, is a specialized authorization established under the Schengen Visa Code (Regulation EC No 810/2009). Its primary purpose is to regulate the movement of certain third-country nationals through the international transit areas of Spanish airports without granting them entry into the national territory or the wider Schengen Area. This visa is a security and immigration control measure designed to manage passengers connecting between two non-Schengen flights.

This visa is ideal for travelers who are citizens of countries listed in Annex IV of the Visa Code, or those on Spain's additional national list, who have a layover at a Spanish international airport. It is specifically for those who do not intend to leave the transit zone, such as to change terminals requiring border crossing or to stay in a hotel outside the airport. It serves as a logistical necessity for international air travel connectivity for specific nationalities.

The key distinguishing feature of the Type A visa is its extreme limitation of movement; it does not permit the holder to pass through passport control or enter the Spanish 'Schengen' zone. Unlike the Type C Short-stay visa, which allows for tourism and local travel, the Type A visa is strictly functional, facilitating the physical transition from one aircraft to another within the international terminal boundaries.
