Overview

Issued to holders of diplomatic/service passports and accredited staff.

Germany's diplomatic and service visa (Type D) is issued to holders of diplomatic or official passports accredited to Germany. It covers ambassadors, consular staff, and other mission personnel on official assignment, with entry arranged via Note Verbale rather than standard application procedures.

The visa lasts for the duration of the posting and is renewable. Fees are waived in full. Eligible family members — spouses and children up to age 25 — are included and also fee-exempt. Spouse work rights depend on reciprocity agreements or individual permission. No PR pathway applies.

This visa is ideal for foreign government officials and mission staff formally accredited to Germany, along with their immediate family.
