Overview

Permanent residence for EU/EEA/Swiss citizens after 5 years of continuous residence in the Czech Republic, granting indefinite stay rights.

The Permanent Residence for EU Citizens is governed by the Czech Act on the Residence of Foreign Nationals, which aligns with EU law regarding the rights of Union citizens to move and reside freely. This status was established to provide a stable, long-term legal foundation for EU nationals who have integrated into Czech society. It fills the gap between temporary registration and full citizenship, offering a permanent legal anchor for those who have demonstrated a commitment to the country through a sustained period of continuous residence.

This status is intended for citizens of EU/EEA countries and Switzerland who have resided in the Czech Republic continuously for five years. While EU citizens can live and work in the country without a permit, this status is distinctive because it grants a secure, indefinite legal standing that is not dependent on maintaining employment or other specific conditions. It provides holders with rights nearly equivalent to those of Czech citizens, including access to social welfare, pension systems, and the ability to apply for Czech citizenship after meeting further requirements.
