Official Information

Overview

Permanent residency for first-degree relatives of Costa Rican citizens including parents, minor children, and minor siblings.

Permanent Residency in Costa Rica is granted to individuals who have maintained legal temporary residency for a minimum of 3 continuous years under any approved category (Pensionado, Rentista, Inversionista, Work, Student, Family, or Digital Nomad). Once granted, permanent residents can work in any occupation without restrictions, own businesses, and live indefinitely in the country.

Permanent residency must be renewed every 5 years. After 7 years of total residency (3 years temporary plus 4 years permanent), permanent residents can apply for Costa Rican citizenship.
