Overview

Temporary residence for foreigners performing paid work under civil contracts (freelance, independent contractor) rather than employment contracts, valid up to 2 years.

The Self-Employment or Civil Contract Visa, formally categorized under the framework of *Residencia Temporal para realizar actividades remuneradas*, represents a strategic evolution in Chile’s immigration policy, designed to modernize the nation’s approach to an increasingly globalized and flexible labor market. Established as part of the comprehensive overhaul initiated by the 2021 Immigration Law (Law No. 21.325), this visa was created to bridge a critical gap in the traditional Chilean immigration system, which historically prioritized rigid, employer-sponsored labor contracts. By recognizing the rise of the gig economy and the necessity of independent professional mobility, the Chilean government introduced this pathway to formalize the status of international talent who contribute to the national economy through service-based agreements rather than traditional subordinate employment. This visa serves as a legal mechanism to integrate highly skilled freelancers, consultants, and independent contractors into the formal tax and social security ecosystem, ensuring that those who provide specialized services to Chilean entities or clients can do so with full legal protection and regulatory compliance, thereby fostering a more dynamic and competitive business environment.

The ideal applicant for this visa is a self-motivated professional or independent contractor who possesses a specialized skill set—such as software development, digital marketing, strategic consulting, or creative arts—and has secured a formal civil contract with a Chilean client or entity. Unlike the standard work visa, which mandates a traditional employer-employee relationship characterized by subordination and dependency, this visa is distinct because it empowers the holder to operate with autonomy, allowing them to provide services under a civil framework that reflects the reality of modern, project-based work. It is particularly advantageous for digital nomads and independent experts who seek to establish a stable, two-year residency in Chile without being tied to a single employer’s payroll. While the visa offers the significant benefit of legal residency and the freedom to work independently, it carries the specific obligation of maintaining comprehensive health insurance throughout the duration of the stay, ensuring that the applicant is self-sufficient and does not place a burden on the national public health system. By facilitating this flexible arrangement, Chile provides a unique, accessible entry point for international professionals to integrate into the local economy while retaining the independence essential to their professional identity.
