Overview

Short-term residence permit for EU/EFTA citizens employed for 3-12 months. Valid for duration of employment contract. No prior visa required for EU/EFTA nationals.

The L permit is a short-term residence permit issued to EU/EFTA citizens for employment in Switzerland lasting between 3 and 12 months. It serves as both residency authorization and work permit. The permit is issued by cantonal authorities without requiring a prior Schengen visa.

Annual Visa Allocation

3,000 visas per year

The annual quota of 3,000 L permits applies specifically to service providers (posted workers) from EU/EFTA states for assignments exceeding 90 days. EU/EFTA nationals with a local Swiss employment contract are not subject to quotas under the Agreement on the Free Movement of Persons (AFMP). Quotas are released to cantons on a quarterly basis. Short-term stays of up to 4 consecutive months or 120 days per year are exempt from quota requirements.
