Overview

The R-1 is a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) counterfoil issued to a Canadian permanent resident abroad who has successfully met their residency obligation.

The PRTD is a Canadian travel document issued to permanent residents who are outside Canada without a valid PR card. It confirms the holder has met their residency obligation — 730 days in Canada within the past 5 years — and allows them to board a commercial carrier to return.

The document costs CAD $50 and is normally single-entry, though multiple-entry can be requested in a cover letter. Once back in Canada, the holder must apply for a new PR card. No sponsorship, job offer, or language requirement applies — the applicant already holds permanent resident status.

This visa is ideal for Canadian permanent residents stranded abroad without a valid PR card who have met their residency obligation and need to return to Canada.
