Overview

Standard electronic visa for foreign tourists, processed online through licensed tour operators or independently, with a mandatory Sustainable Development Fee of USD 100/day.

The Bhutan Tourist e-Visa is the standard electronic authorization required for international visitors wishing to experience the Kingdom of Bhutan. Aligned with the nation's "High Value, Low Volume" tourism policy, this visa is designed to preserve Bhutan's unique cultural heritage and pristine environment while ensuring a high-quality experience for guests. Most foreign nationals must apply for this visa online, typically through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator or an approved hotel, which facilitates the necessary government clearance before travel. The process requires a passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended date of departure.

In addition to the non-refundable USD 40 visa application fee, all international tourists are required to pay a mandatory Sustainable Development Fee (SDF). As of the current policy, this fee is set at USD 100 per person per night for adults. The SDF is a critical component of the visa process, as visa clearance is only granted once both the visa fee and the full SDF payment have been verified by the Tourism Council of Bhutan. This fee directly supports national development initiatives, including free healthcare, education, and infrastructure projects, ensuring that tourism contributes positively to the country's long-term sustainability.
