Overview

Three-year permit for persons with Bahamian heritage connections allowing the holder to reside and engage in gainful occupation in the Bahamas.

The Resident Belonger Permit was established to provide a legal status for individuals who have a constitutional entitlement to apply for Bahamian citizenship but are currently in a transitional phase. This permit specifically targets persons born in The Bahamas to non-Bahamian parents, as well as certain individuals born abroad to Bahamian parents, who are in the process of determining their long-term status. It serves as a bridge, allowing these individuals to live and work in The Bahamas legally while their citizenship applications are being processed.

Before the introduction of this permit, many such individuals faced significant challenges, often described as being in a 'no man's land' without the ability to access basic services like banking. By providing this permit, the government offers a more affordable and accessible way for these 'belongers' to maintain legal residency. The permit requires proof of birth, parental citizenship, and residency, ensuring that those who have a genuine constitutional claim to the country can reside there with dignity and legal recognition while their formal citizenship status is finalized.
