Overview

Temporary visa for researchers, professors, and academics conducting research, teaching, or academic extension activities exceeding 90 days at Brazilian institutions.

The Research, Teaching, and Academic Extension Visa (VITEM I) is a temporary visa category designed to support international academic and scientific exchange, governed by Brazil's migration legislation and normative resolutions from the National Immigration Council. It fills the critical gap for foreign academics, researchers, and professors who intend to stay in Brazil for more than 90 days to conduct intellectual work without establishing a formal employment relationship with a Brazilian institution. This visa facilitates the internationalization of Brazilian universities and research centers by allowing experts to contribute to the country's scientific and educational development.

This visa is ideal for researchers, scientists, visiting professors, and academic professionals who are invited by Brazilian educational or research institutions to participate in projects, scientific cooperation, or academic extension programs. It is distinctive because it focuses on intellectual contribution rather than commercial employment. Applicants must provide proof of their academic affiliation and the nature of their research or teaching project. While it allows for a stay of over 90 days, it requires the applicant to hold valid health insurance, ensuring they are covered during their academic tenure in Brazil.
