Post-research work authorization allowing researchers to remain in Belgium for up to 12 months to seek employment or establish a research-related business.
The Researcher Orientation Year is a temporary residence permit that allows non-EU/EEA researchers who have recently completed their research projects in Belgium to remain in the country for up to 12 months. This period is specifically intended to provide researchers with the necessary time to seek employment or to establish their own business or self-employed activity. By facilitating this transition, Belgium aims to retain highly skilled talent and integrate them into the local labor market or innovation ecosystem.
During this orientation year, the individual is granted unlimited access to the Belgian labor market, meaning they do not require a separate work permit to accept a job offer. However, the permit is non-renewable and cannot be extended beyond the 12-month period. If the researcher secures employment, their employer must apply for a single permit on their behalf. If they choose to start a business, they must obtain a professional card. It is essential that applicants maintain their legal status and demonstrate sufficient financial resources throughout this period to avoid the premature termination of their residence permit.
Visas you can typically switch to from this status.
