Overview

Work visa for young people aged up to 26 providing childcare and light household duties in exchange for accommodation and meals in a Belgian host family.

The Au Pair program in Belgium is a cultural exchange initiative designed for young people to live with a local host family, allowing them to immerse themselves in Belgian culture while improving their language skills in Dutch, French, or German. It is not considered a standard employment regime; instead, it is regulated by specific agreements that emphasize the cultural and educational aspects of the stay. The program fills the gap for young individuals seeking an authentic, immersive experience in Belgium, provided they are between 18 and 25 (or 29 in Wallonia) and meet the necessary legal requirements for a long-stay visa.

This visa is ideal for young adults who wish to experience daily life in a Belgian household while assisting with light childcare and household duties for a limited number of hours per week. Participants must have completed high school, be in good health, and possess health insurance. What makes this program distinctive is its focus on cultural exchange rather than professional work; au pairs are prohibited from holding other jobs, and the host family is required to provide board, lodging, and a stipend, ensuring the au pair can focus on their language studies and cultural integration.
