An onshore permanent visa for people who need to live in Australia to provide substantial, ongoing care for a relative with a medical condition.
The Australian Carer visa (subclass 836) is a permanent onshore visa for people already in Australia who need to stay to provide substantial, ongoing care for a relative with a long-term medical condition. The relative must have no reasonable access to adequate care from other sources in Australia.
Granted as permanent residence from the outset, the visa carries full work rights and allows family members to be included. Processing is subject to capping and queuing, with queue release typically taking 4.5 to 7 years. Sponsorship by the Australian relative or a household member is required.
This visa is ideal for foreign nationals already onshore who are providing — or are needed to provide — long-term personal care for an Australian relative with no other reasonable care options.
