Overview

The Bridging Visa D (BVD) subclass 040 is an Australian emergency visa that prevents individuals from becoming unlawful non-citizens when their current visa expires while they are fixing a failed substantive application — such as paying the wrong fee or lodging the wrong form.

Free to apply, the BVD lasts 5 working days from grant, with no work rights (condition 8101) and no re-entry if the holder leaves Australia. All applicants and family members must be in Australia at both application and grant. Form 1007 is lodged in person at a Home Affairs office; decisions typically take 1–3 days.

This visa is ideal for people physically in Australia whose current visa is about to expire and who need a few days to correct and re-lodge a failed substantive visa application.
