Allows you to stay in Australia lawfully while waiting for a decision on a substantive visa application.
Bridging Visa A (subclass 010) is a free temporary visa that maintains lawful status in Australia while a decision on an onshore substantive visa application is pending. It is typically granted automatically when a new substantive visa application is lodged, though it can also be applied for using Form 1005.
The BVA remains valid until a decision is made on the substantive visa and carries no travel rights — the visa ceases immediately if the holder leaves Australia. Work rights mirror the conditions of the last substantive visa, though a further BVA with work rights can be sought if financial hardship can be demonstrated.
This visa is ideal for people already in Australia who need to maintain lawful status while waiting for a partner, skilled, or other substantive visa decision.
