Official Information

Overview

Highly skilled employment with a recognized degree and salary above the member state threshold. Portable across EU after 12 months.

The EU Blue Card is a specialized residence and work permit designed to attract highly skilled professionals from non-EU countries to the Austrian labor market. It is intended for individuals who possess a recognized higher education qualification, such as a university degree, and have secured a binding job offer in Austria that corresponds to their professional expertise. To qualify, the position must meet a specific, legally stipulated minimum gross annual salary threshold, ensuring that the applicant is compensated at an above-average level. This permit streamlines the immigration process for top-tier talent by bypassing certain labor market tests required for other work permits.

Applicants for the Blue Card must provide proof of their completed tertiary education, which generally requires a minimum duration of three years. In specific sectors, such as information and communications technology or for certain service managers, documented professional experience may be accepted as an alternative to a formal degree. The total costs associated with obtaining the permit typically include an application fee of EUR 156, a granting fee of EUR 26, and a personalization fee of EUR 20. Once issued, the Blue Card provides a clear pathway to long-term residency and offers holders the ability to move more freely within the European Union for professional purposes.
